Another New Years Eve, another “What am I going to wear?”

After 40, that’s an even harder question to answer because what once worked before, mysteriously doesn’t seem appropriate any more. If you’re fretting about what to wear so you don’t look too young, too old, but just right then here are:

5 Do’s and Dont's to Look like a Boomer Babe on New Year’s Eve!

1. Do Stick to Sophisticated Colors

As much as we love color, bright evening wear can be hard too pull off after 40.  Against mature skin it can look loud, harsh and frankly, not chic. One suggestion is to stick to neutrals like soft black, navy, brown, gold or taupe. You can never go wrong with these classic colors as they are a beautiful canvas against which to show off your face, skin and hair.  Neutrals are also work as a fabulous backdrop to splashes of color, so if you want to add a bright evening clutch, necklace, pashmina or pair of shoes then goes right ahead!
If you are really tired of neutrals, an all over color is still an option but keep it toned down.

The color you choose should blend in with your skin tone, rather than scream I’ve arrived. When you walk in a room people should notice you not your bold, bright dress. Rich Jewel tones like royal purple, ruby red, and emerald green are hot this season and are a great choice because they are always regal. One caution though- Stick to one solid color for a more elegant look and accent with neutrals only. Bags, shoes and jeweler should be in black, gold and or silver.

2. Don’t Over Dazzle Them

Yes, it’s New Year’s but too much flash will make you look like a hardened Las Vegas Showgirl. Glitz is great, but go sparingly on the sequins and sparkle. Touches here and there are more tasteful than head to toe. Same with jewelry-put them emphasis on a stunning necklace, a great pair of earrings, a wonderful cocktail ring or fabulous bracelet but don’t all of these pieces all together or you’ll look like an overdecorated Christmas tree.Image_jj

3. Do keep it Clean and Simple

When it comes to the style of dress that works best for Women over 40- here’s the simple truth.  Frilly, Fussy, Busy, is old. Clean, simple, more tailored is modern. Be sure to stay away from dresses with too many busy details, complicated patterns, and crazy hemlines and necklines that are just there for shock value. Steer clear of cheap trendy fabrics and avoid dresses with too much “stuff “hanging off them, as if they are made for gypsy fortune tellers. Do keep it clean and simple. You only need one major beautiful focal point like a gorgeous slit up the side or a fabulous jeweled collar neckline. Less is always more.

4. Don’t Overdo Your Hair and Make-up

Newyearsgala Just because New Year’s is the BIG event of the Year doesn’t mean the message here is to have BIG hair. On the contrary, big, puffy, sprayed hair that doesn’t move is dated. (We know you know that, but another shot of hairspray is so tempting isn’t it) Same for make-up.  This is not a costume party. Don’t automatically apply your make-up any heavier than you would normally do any other night out on the town. But a smokey eyeliner and false lashes will give you that extra party punch you are looking for.

5. Do make sure you look Sexy

If you think the definition of sexy is spaghetti straps, deep necklines, short skirts and showing off showing off as much skin as you can, then think again. Over 40 sexy can be as simple as body skimming clothes that show off your silhouette, and not necessarily your skin. If you want to take it a step further then, find your own hot spot and play it up. Great legs? splurge on a decadent pair of  high heels. Beautiful bust? Don’t hide it. Make sure to find a top or dress with a tasteful V neckline and wear a great plumping bra to make sure you are looking perky! As the costume designer, Rosemary Ponzo says, “ Buy the right dress and the party will come!”

The Truth about Tyra Banks and Modeling

We confess, we love to watch America's Top Model. Its so fun to see the girls in the glamorous and not so glamorous settings, and how they can be transformed from a gauntly teen to a sultry vamp with some great hair, makeup and wardrobe. What is it about Tyra Bank's reality show that has us all fascinated about the inside scoop of the modeling world?

There is a good chance that you know someone who either wants to be a model or wants their kids to model...but where do you go to get advice on the how, what and where of it all?

Judyhshot Meet, Judy Goss, former Ford model/agent and author of the soon to be released book, How to Break into Modeling for Under $20.00.

Breakintomodeling1 Judy has worked in and around the fashion industry for over 20 years, and was surprised when so many people when learning of her past, always had so many questions about how to get into modeling.

Moreover, Goss was shocked and disappointed to hear many horror stories of people getting ripped off by so called "agents" and "photographers" who made false claims and took their money with no results.

New Dry Nail Polish Strips

JoJami-Was in the drug store the other day and saw a big display of a new "dry" nail polish, that you just peel and stick on. I thought, now that sounds too good to be true, but thought what the heck and grabbed  a package.

Dry_nail_polsih_2  It's called Incoco, Dry Nail Applique. Available at your local Walgreen ($5.99)

I took it home and it sat on my counter for a few weeks, since I was hesitate to have to figure it out how to put the darn things on. However, last night I had a dinner to go to and didn't want to fight the crowds to get a manicure, so I sat down with the package and dove it.

5 Presents every Fashionista over 40 should ask Santa for!

Chantelle187x204 1. A Sexy Bra

Granted, after 40 your breasts are typically heading south, but that doesn’t mean you should cover them up with a boring, stretched out beige bra up and forget about them. The quickest way to feel good about your changing boomer body is to Perk up your girls with a gorgeous, sexy new bra. Splurge on something a little more feminine and pretty. We are seeing some gorgeous options out there like two toned bras in ice cream colors of lime sorbet and lemon ice, rich chocolates and strawberry pinks! Or for the holidays go bold with jewel tones of ruby, amethyst or emerald. How fun to run around all day knowing that underneath it all is a sexy woman!

Greycape208x261 2. A Cape

The trick to looking fabulous after 40 is not to try and look young, but to look modern. A cape is a great way to do that. Fashionable and fresh, a cape is a sophisticated way to show you’ve still got flair! Not only that, but they are really comfortable, since they are not as restrictive as a coat and warmer than a pashmina. It’s the newest look in stepping out in style! Go for a grey or deep chocolate color for a versatile look that can go day into evening. If you go off to a black tie affair, of course a black velvet one can be quiet gorgeous and very formal.

Nikeboot190x270 3. Sleek High Heeled Boots

A simple formula to look boomer chic is to stick to simple classic looks, (a crisp shirt, flat front pants and fitted cropped jacket, for example) and put the emphasis on the accessories. One of the most important details this season is boots. Finding a wow pair to personalize your look is key. Nothing can date you faster than an out of style, worn our pair.

Opt for a boot that is finer in style to ooze sophistication. Not too round or square toe and keep the heel thinner or go for a wedge. Too clunky is funky and better left to the younger crowd! If you’re looking for comfort and style, try some of Cole Haans new boots that have Nike air cushions in the toe. As we age, our feet get drier and the pad on the bottom of the foot can become tender after walking all day. This pair allows you to have fun in heels and still feel comfortable.

4. Smart Handbag

Enough of teensy weensy bags that barely hold your lipstick and ridiculously oversized purses that let you lug around everything you own and make you look like a bag lady. For Grown-Up gals it’s time for something stylish but smart. There’s a whole new line of luxury bags out there that look gorgeous but also keep you organized. We think the Butler Bag is a great choice because it is fashionable on the outside, but the inside stays absolutely organized!! The new exotic fall colors in spicy ginger and olive martini are just the thing to add some zing into your wardrobe!

Gloves194x243
5. Gorgeous Gloves

If your coat is neutral and you want to jazz things up, try a new pair of fresh gloves. Snakeskin and extra long leather is all the rage this season. Bold colors and exotic skins are easy to pull off, especially if you’re only wearing them until you step inside. Look for soft supple leathers that aren’t too bulky. Sure you have the ones you walk the dog with but for going out change them out. Don’t go for the practical black or brown ones; find something that sings your personality. Dare to be wild. You will have fun soaking in all the compliments!

5 Hottest Trends in Women’s Fine Jewelry

If you're planning on asking Santa for a little bling bling this Christmas then make sure your wish list is up to date with the latest jewelry trends. After chatting with our friend  and jewelry expert, Alan Sklut of Diamond Empress for tips and trends we bring you....

What's hot in fine jewelry this year:

Dana_david_2
1. Sprinkles of Sparkle

Jewelry designs this season are more subtle than before emphasizing the metal more than the diamond. Many pieces like this Cono Harmony Open Pendant by Dana David are lightly sprinkled with diamonds, rather than encrusted. Also, burnished stones offer an elegant sparkle that is also softer looking and easier to wear. This new change is a welcome relief to the more-is-more mentality of past seasons that some found overbearing.

Diamondinrough2. Odd and Unusual Rocks

Rough, oversize, or irregular shaped stones create one of a kind looks. This stunning diamond ring with (one of a kind stone) by Diamond in the Rough is a perfect statement piece for any woman 40+ who wants to look stylish and chic. You’ll also find unusually shaped rocks popping up in necklaces this season- another great option, especially set against an elegant little black dress.

Heart1
3. High Styles for Hearts

Hearts are always in fashion and the latest styles are nothing less than dramatic. Look for embellished initial lockets, interlocking open heart designs in larger sizes and colorful mother of pearl charms dangling from larger open loop chain necklaces and bracelets. Love this sleek Judith Ripka Fontaine Heart Enhancer that blends old world sophistication with cool modern lines of the new world.

Pink_and_diamond
4. Red and its related hues are the ‘Hot’ color

If you love Jennifer Lopez’s big pink diamond, it’s time to get one for yourself. Pink Diamonds, Rich pinky red Rubellite (red tourmaline), grapey amethyst and soft pink tourmaline, are the recent favorites of many jewelry designers. Feminine and soft, who could resist this Platinum and 18 k pink and white diamond gold ring by Diva Jewelry?

Arman
5. Metal Magic

This season designers are playing with metals and creating surfaces that rival luxury fabrics in their sensory appeal. You might want to consider a bracelet with silky satin sandblasting, or a piece with an antique Raku` pottery broken metal look. This exotic hammered and hand formed 22 karat gold gothic and Byzantine inspired cuff by Arman wreaks luxury.

Laser hair removal, part 2

Hi there, JoJami here!

I promised that I would keep you all updated on my journey through the laser hair removal ordeal~

Picture005_2Well, I'm happy to report, that I have now had 2 sessions, with 4 more to go, and so far so good. It's amazing that I have already seen results of less hair Pic7 growth and the skin area that has been treated, is much smoother than its ever been! (in case you haven't heard, I am having my underarms and bikini area done)

After checking in this week, to have my session, I mentioned to Bridgette, my technician, that I was writing about this. She checked it out, and said that I had gotten the part wrong about the pain free, not being able to do the upper lip. SO, please note that you CAN have the upper lip done with the pain free laser! OH! how great is that!

Please comment, if you have had laser hair removal or have questions!
